Alexandre Herculano nasceu no Pateo do Gil, na rua de S. Bento, em 28 de março de 1810. Estudou com os padres de S. Filippe Nery, nas Necessidades; mas em 1831 envolveu se na revolta do 4 d'infanteria contra o governo de D. Miguel e teve de fugir de Lisboa a bordo da fragata franceza «Melpomène.» D'aqui embarcou num navio inglez e visitou Plymouth, Folmouth, Jersey, S. Malô, Rennes, Granville. Tomou parte na expedição do Mindello. Em 1833 foi nomeado bibliothecario da bibliotheca do Porto, logar que conservou até 1836, data em que, espicaçado já pela mania burgueza do «descargo da consciencia e dos deveres cumpridos», se demittiu para não prestar juramento ao governo da contra revolução. Em 1837 publica a «Voz do Propheta» e dois annos depois é nomeado pelo rei Fernando seu bibliothecario. É nesta epoca que dirige e escreve no «Panorama», onde publicou numerosos artigos, incluindo os romances: «O Monge de Cistér», «o Eurico», «O Bobo», «A Dama do pé de cabra», «O Parocho d'Aldea», etc, etc...
