Je n'ai pas besoin de retracer ici la vie de M. l'abbé Jérôme Coignard, professeur d'éloquence au collège de Beauvais, bibliothécaire de M. de Séez, Sagiensis episcopi bibliothecarius solertissimus , comme le porte son épitaphe, plus tard secrétaire au charnier Saint Innocent, puis enfin conservateur de cette Astaracienne, la reine des bibliothèques, dont la perte est à jamais déplorable. Il périt assassiné, sur la route de Lyon, par un juif cabbaliste du nom de Mosaïde ( Judæa manu nefandissima ), laissant plusieurs ouvrages interrompus et le souvenir de beaux entretiens familiers. Toutes les circonstances de son existence singulière et de sa fin tragique ont été rapportées par son disciple, Jacques Ménétrier, surnommé Tournebroche parce qu'il était fils d'un rôtisseur de la rue Saint Jacques.
