ENSIMMÄINEN LUKU

Oli kaunis, valoisa talviaamu. Täysikuu kumotti taivaalla ja kynttiläin valo näkyi joka ikkunasta K:n pitäjän kirkonkylässä, sillä nyt oli jouluaamu, ja silloinhan köyhinkin mökkiläinen hankkii itsellensä kynttilän.

Seppälän kestikievaritalossa oli kello täsmälleen viisi, kun pieni tyttönen astui tupaan. Hän seisahtui ovelle ja kysyi hyvää huomenta lausuttuaan: »Mitä kello on?» Emäntä, joka tuvassa askaroitsi, katsoi seinässä olevaan kelloon, vastaten: »Kelloko? Viisihän se on. Mitäpä sinä tyttö riepu näin aikaiselta liikkeellä olet?»

»Minä pääsen kirkkoon! Äiti antoi takkinsa ylleni, ja lukkarin matamilta sai Iiri lainaksi hänen tyttö vainajansa takin. Matami myöskin lupasi kirkonaikana käydä sairaan äitimme luona.»
