Chaucer's Official Life by James Root Hulbert delves into the fascinating and often mysterious life of one of the greatest literary figures in history, Geoffrey Chaucer. Hulbert's meticulous research and comprehensive analysis provide a valuable contribution to Chaucerian scholarship.
The book begins by offering a brief historical context, introducing the reader to the political and social landscape of 14th-century England. Hulbert then takes us on a journey through Chaucer's life, meticulously piecing together the scant details available from historical records, legal documents, and Chaucer's own works.
What sets this biography apart is Hulbert's focus on Chaucer's official roles and government careers. He provides a deeply insightful exploration of Chaucer's involvement in the bureaucratic machinery of the time, shedding light on his various roles as a diplomat, courtier, and customs officer. This meticulous examination not only presents a different facet of Chaucer's life but also offers a unique perspective on the complexities and intricacies of medieval politics.
Hulbert's writing style is engaging and accessible, making complex historical information easily digestible for both scholars and general readers. He skillfully weaves together narrative and analysis, exploring Chaucer's personal life, his interactions with influential figures, and the broader historical events that shaped his world.
Moreover, Hulbert presents a balanced portrayal of Chaucer, neither overly romanticizing nor overly critical of his subject. He acknowledges Chaucer's achievements and contributions, while also addressing his flaws and contradictions, resulting in a nuanced and comprehensive view of the poet.
One of the greatest strengths of Chaucer's Official Life lies in its meticulous attention to detail. Hulbert's extensive research is evident throughout the book, as he presents a wealth of primary sources and references, allowing readers to delve further into specific aspects of Chaucer's life and works.
However, this thoroughness can occasionally weigh down the narrative, and some sections may feel overly dense or overwhelming for casual readers. Nevertheless, for those with a genuine interest in Chaucer, his work, and the historical period in which he lived, this book is an invaluable resource.
In conclusion, Chaucer's Official Life is a remarkable and comprehensive exploration of the life and career of Geoffrey Chaucer. Hulbert's expertise and dedication shine through in this meticulously researched biography, providing readers with a deeper understanding of both the man and the world in which he thrived. Whether you are an avid Chaucer enthusiast or a curious novice, this book is an essential addition to any collection on medieval literature and history. BY JAMES ROOT HULBERT NOTE In making reference to books and manuscripts, I have attempted to use abbreviations which seem, reasonably clear. Perhaps the least intelligible are C. R. which stands for Close Rolls, and L. R. which stands for Life Records of Chaucer (Chaucer Soc.) Wherever possible, I have referred to prints rather than to original manuscripts because the printed calendars are much more accessible. In a work which has involved the copying of innumerable references, many of which are to documents in the Public Record Office not available to me as I revise my copy, it is too much to expect that there should be no inaccuracies. Therefore, if the reader discovers erroneous references, I must ask his leniency. For their courtesy and assistance in making books and documents accessible to me, I wish most heartily to thank J. A. Herbert, Esq., of the Manuscript Department, the British Museum, and Edward Salisbury, Esq., and Hubert Hall, Esq., of the Public Record Office. To my friend and colleague, Dr. Thomas A. Knott, of the University of Chicago, I am deeply indebted for his kindness in reading over parts of my manuscript and trying to make their style clearer and more readable. My greatest obligation, however, is to Professor John M. Manly, not only for encouragement and specific suggestions as to the handling of this subject, but for a training which has made possible whatever in my results may be considered of value...
