Le Laurentic , paquebot d'allure altière, remontait gracieusement le Saint Laurent. Il creusait, dans le calme de l'eau, une entaille qui s'ouvrait de toute la largeur de son flanc. L'écume ruisselait et une vague énorme, courant sur la surface troublée dans un lourd sommeil, allait porter aux deux rives la plainte du fleuve blessé. La cloche du quart sonne allègrement l'heure de midi: une escouade nouvelle de marins accourt à la manoeuvre. Le soleil de juillet alanguit les passagers; les uns, accoudés au rebord, les autres, paresseux dans les chaises longues, subissent l'enchantement du paysage canadien. L'île d'Orléans étale à leurs regards la merveille de ses feuillages et de ses grèves. Le phare de Saint Jean de l'Ile dresse une silhouette blanche sur un quai ancien, et on admire les érables, la coquetterie des maisons groupées autour de l'humble église...
